Understands Rules and Belonging
Child follows shared group rules and shows a sense of being part of a classroom community.
Ages 30–54 months
Why it matters
Recognizing that a group has agreements everyone helps keep is an early civics skill. It builds the cooperation, fairness, and sense of belonging that let children participate in a community larger than their family.
What mastery looks like
- Names one or two classroom rules and why they help the group.
- Follows shared agreements with occasional reminders.
- Describes themselves as a member of the class (for example, "I'm a helper").
How to observe it
- During group time, does the child remind a peer of an agreement such as "We listen when a friend is talking"?
- Does the child show pride in classroom jobs or routines they share?
Accessibility
- Pair spoken rules with simple pictures or signs so every child can follow and reference them.
