Recognizes Print in the Environment
Child notices that print carries meaning in signs, labels, and books.
Ages 30–54 months
Why it matters
Realizing that the marks around us stand for words is the gateway insight of literacy; it motivates a child to attend to letters and how books work.
What mastery looks like
- Points to print (not pictures) when asked where to read on a page.
- Recognizes a few familiar logos, signs, or their own written name.
How to observe it
- When sharing a book, does the child point to words or "pretend read" the text?
- Does the child notice and comment on signs and labels in daily settings?
Accessibility
- Use large-print or high-contrast materials, or tactile/braille labels, for children with low vision.
