Sorting Socks

Children sort a basket of clean socks by color, building classification skills.

Ages 24–48 months

Materials

  • A basket of clean socks in three or four distinct colors
  • Three or four bins or hoops to sort into

Steps

  • Show the child one sock and name its color.
  • Invite the child to find the bin "where this color lives."
  • Let the child continue sorting the rest of the basket at their own pace.
  • When finished, count how many socks are in each bin together.

Variations

  • Sort by size instead of color for an added challenge.
  • Add a "mystery sock" of a new color and ask where it should go.

Differentiation

  • For younger children, start with just two colors.
  • For older children, sort by two attributes (color and size).

Accessibility

  • Offer socks with distinct textures or patterns alongside color.

Safety

  • Use only clean, child-safe socks; supervise to prevent mouthing of small items.
