Finger-Food Pick and Drop
An infant practices the pincer grasp by picking up soft food pieces and dropping them into a small cup.
Ages 8–14 months
Materials
- A handful of soft, dissolvable, pea-sized foods such as cooked peas, soft banana bits, or puff cereal
- A small open cup or bowl
- A clean high-chair tray or wiped low table
Steps
- Point to a single piece of food and name it to draw the infant's attention.
- Model picking up one piece with your thumb and index finger, slowly and clearly.
- Invite the infant to pick up a piece their own way, encouraging any attempt.
- Offer the cup and say: drop it in, cheering each release into the cup.
- Let the infant eat the pieces and repeat at their own pace.
Variations
- Place pieces inside an empty egg carton so the infant must reach into each cup.
- Use a slightly raised lip or low edge so pieces are easier to pinch.
Differentiation
- For beginners, offer larger pieces and celebrate a raking grasp as a first step.
- For more skilled infants, scatter pieces farther apart to encourage reaching and a precise pinch.
Safety
- Use only soft, dissolvable foods sized to reduce choking risk and stay within arm's reach the entire time.
- Never leave the infant unattended with food.
