Pattern Trains
Children build a repeating AB "train" of blocks by copying and extending a model.
Ages 36–60 months
Materials
- Two colors or two shapes of blocks or linking cubes
Steps
- Lay out a red-blue-red-blue train and say the pattern aloud.
- Ask the child to make a train that looks just like yours.
- Invite the child to add the next block to keep the pattern going.
- Say the pattern together, pointing to each car.
Variations
- Make patterns with sounds or movements (clap-stomp-clap-stomp).
- Try an AABB pattern for a challenge.
Differentiation
- For beginners, copy the pattern alongside your finished model.
- For older children, ask "What comes next?" before they place a block.
Accessibility
- Use blocks that differ by shape or texture as well as color.
