Color Hunt

Children find objects of a named color around the room, building color vocabulary.

Ages 24–48 months

Materials

  • Familiar objects in several common colors already in the room
  • Optional color cards to hold up

Steps

  • Name a color and say "Let's find something red!"
  • Invite the child to point to or bring an object of that color.
  • Confirm and name the object and its color together.
  • Repeat with a new color, keeping the pace playful.

Variations

  • Go on a color hunt outdoors.
  • Let the child choose the color to search for next.

Differentiation

  • For younger children, hold up a matching color card as a cue.
  • For older children, ask them to find two things of the same color.

Accessibility

  • For color vision differences, name objects by label or pattern as well as color.
