Lap Songs and Sound Play
A caregiver sings simple lap songs and rhythmic sound games to invite an infant's response.
Ages 0–12 months
Materials
- Your own singing voice
- Optional soft shaker or bell for gentle sound
Steps
- Sing a short, familiar song such as a lullaby, watching the baby's face for a response.
- Pause before a key moment, such as a gentle bounce or tickle, to let the baby anticipate it.
- Repeat the same song so the baby learns its shape and refrain.
- Try a soft shaker to one side and notice if the baby turns toward the sound.
- Follow the baby's cues, slowing or stopping when they look away or tire.
Variations
- Swap the lullaby for a livelier bouncing rhyme and notice the change in response.
- Add simple hand motions so an older infant can begin to anticipate and imitate.
Differentiation
- For newborns, keep songs slow and quiet; for older infants, add playful pauses and bounces.
Accessibility
- For infants with hearing differences, emphasize touch, facial expression, and gentle rhythmic movement alongside or instead of sound.
Safety
- Support the infant's head and neck and keep any sound gentle and close, never startling.
